Pot Metal a fait ses débuts dans l'industrie automobile naissante du début des années 1920. Tous les restes de métaux non ferreux ont été rassemblés et jetés dans une marmite. Les métaux non ferreux, ou sans fer, avaient un point de fusion bas, ce qui les rend parfaits pour les moulages. Le mélange pot métal n'était pas du tout précis. Certains métaux couramment utilisés étaient le plomb, le zinc, l'étain, le cuivre, le magnésium, l'aluminium et le cadmium. De petites quantités de fer se retrouveraient également dans le mélange.
